Tamara,
Yep, your Mom would be my cousin ... probably 3rd cousin. I guess you and I would be 4th cousins. If your Mom was at her grandparents house in California in the summer of 1956 we likely did meet.I was there with my Granddad and Granny Knight and my granny's sister Bram Huie.Your Mom may have known my Granddad as Uncle "Rufe."
I was wondering why Aunt Pearl and Uncle Ab kept going back and forth from OK to AR and back again.I was basing that observation on the birthplaces of their children according to the census records.I knew that they went to OK very early in their marriage, but the census seemed to indicate that they were still in AR when your grandfather Thomas was born.I just thought I was mistaken about what I had been told .., but maybe I wasn't wrong after all.Maybe Uncle Ab simply "adjusted" the records to suit himself by getting Thomas' birth registered in AR instead of OK.Wouldn't have been hard to do back in those days. That sly fox.Ha haMy granddad Rufus thought very highly of Ab ... called him a "good man."He wasn't one to give out compliments lightly.
I hadn't thought to look in the GA Land Lotteries for Matthew Knight.Excellent idea.Even if he's not one of the ones you found, well, at least it's one less place left to search, huh?
I have been searching for my Knight family for almost 7 years now, all alone, until I found your posting quite by accident last week.I figured, since Pearl and Rufus were the only children of John and Mary Knight who reached adulthood, that there just wasn't anyone else interested in the family. It feels so good to know there is someone else out there who cares that Pearl and Rufus existed.
You said your Mom always spoke wonderfully of her grandma Pearl. It must have run in their genes.I loved my granddad more that anybody else in the world.Only he could make me sorry I had misbehaved, only he could make me sorry I had disappointed him, only he could bring me to tears if I thought he was displeased with me in any way.
He was about 5'10", which was a little above average for a man of his generation. He was ruddy complected, and I would swear that when I was little he had reddish hair. His eyes were piercing blue.As a young man, he was handsome in a rugged, 1930s sort of way, if you aren't too young to know what I mean.He was, for many years, the City Marshal of Clinton, AR.I don't know how many times he was re-elected, but I would guess he was City Marshal for at least 10 years. He never campaigned ... he just got re-eleted over and over.
One day when I was about 10 or 11, I came home from school and found a pile of the strangest junk in our back yard.It looked like a big truck's gas tank with holes chopped in it, and there were all sorts of curled metal pipes and tubing tossed on top of the heap.About that time Granddad came around the corner of the house, so I asked him what all that stuff was.He said, "It's what's left of an illegal still."I wanted to know what a "still" was, naturally, and he told me it was an apparatus used to make "corn likker."I asked why the big tank thingy had holes hacked in it, and he told me if the alcohol fumes built up in the tank, what with it laying out in our back yard in theheat, the tank could explode, so he said he "just made some vents in it."That was one of my earliest, and most memorable, chemistry lessons.Ha ha
I don't have the complete information on Aunt Pearl's children, their marriages, etc.I would like very much to have it.I have more on Rufus' side, but I would prefer to e-mail you direct with that info as it will, of course, concern my uncle, and he is NOT amenable to having his personal information loose in cyberspace.I tell him he's too late, it's out there already anyway, but still ... he's past 80 years old and won't hear of it, and I don't like to go against his wishes just to please myself.I love him dearly
Anyway, my e-mail is [email protected] you would like to e-mail me direct, I will happily send you the info on the rest of my branch of the Knight family.
Later,Katy
