Re: Knopsnider of Fayette Co., PA
I might be of some help to you.I am researching Johannes Knappschneider (1729-1795) who came to Moore Twp, Northampton Co., PA in 1753 from Baden, Germany. His surname has been spelled various ways, including Knapsnyder, Knapsnider, Knopsnyder, Knopsnider, Nap Snyder, etc.He moved to Fayette Co., PA in about 1788, and died there in 1795.I believe there were 6 children of Johannes and his wife Catharina. The children were George, John, Conrad, Sybilla, Regina, and Catharina.I'm descended from his son George (1759-1845) who remained in Northampton Co., PA, and changed his name to George K. Snyder, making it a real pain to trace.
Just last week I received a translation of Johannes' will from Fayette Co.It was written in the old German script. It refers to his wife Hannah and their son.It also refers to his own children, but only mentions Conrad by name.Conrad moved to Somerset Co., PA about the same time as his father.I believe the son of Johannes and Hannah is likely Godfrey, and Ahimas that you mention is the son of Godfrey.I haven't done much research on them.
Johannes was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.He was to receive Donation Lands for his service.I've found one record where he sold his rights to the land for 5 shillings. The date on this document was 1798, three years after his death.Recently I found a reference that shows that in 1813, the State of Pennsylvania awarded the Donation Lands to his legal heirs.I'm working on getting more information on that, and am hopeful it will name the heirs.
I'd be happy to share other information with you if you're interested.
