Joseph B. [Beverly] Knowles, b. 5 March 1830 Monroe Co., Ga., d. 18 August 1862 Knoxville, Tenn., was the oldest child of Robert Knowles, b. 1801 Rhode Island, d. 7 May 1865 Brundidge, Ala., and Elizabeth (Slaughter) Knowles, born 1809 Greene Co., Ga. Frances Eugenia "Fannie" Knowles, b. 8 Dec. 1860, daughter of Joseph B. Knowles and Lucinda (Flournoy) Knowles, married Watson Green Ganus. She died in childbirth 16 March 1877 in Pike Co., Ala. Her son John Watson Ganus moved to Texas before 1900. The estate records and family records of Robert Knowles and Joseph B. Knowles give evidence of these relationships. Robert Knowles came South to Georgia in 1824. He almost certainly knew the Knowles in Greene Co., Ga., where Elizabeth's Slaughter and Kimbrough families lived before they moved to Putnam County. It is very unlikely that these Knowles families were related. Robert was a descendant of Henry Knowles, who was in Rhode Island by 1644.
