GREENSBORO - William Henry Knowles, 81, of Greensboro passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 at Moses Cone Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at the Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Funeral Chapel. Interment will be private. Mr. Knowles was born on March 11, 1930 in Rome, Ga., to the late Mr. and Mrs. William and Mary McCain Knowles Sr. He had resided in Greensboro since 1947 and was of the Baptist faith. William retired in 2002 with over 53 years of combined service as a manager for J.P. Stevens, Associated, Thurston Motor Lines and Overnight Express. He was currently employed by Cedar Crest Golf Course. He was a member of Revolution Lodge # 552 AF & AM, and also a member of the Rose Chapter # 178 Order of the Eastern Star, and the Oriental Shrine Club of Greensboro. William was an avid golfer and supported the sport whenever possible. He was also a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Collins Knowles of the home, daughter and son-in-law Donna and Jeff Hagood of Burlington, a brother Russell Knowles of Rome, Ga., grandsons and their wives, Bryan and Misty Hagood and Matt and Erin Hagood and a great-grandson, Jack Hagood and several nieces. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday.
