Regarding John Knowles.. here are some excerpts. What I have left out is largely information about his revolutionary war record.
"He was born in Ireland in the town of Belaminah (Belymena) in Antrim County parish of Ehochel the 4th day of July in the year 1749."
"He was living in Cumberland County State of Pennsylvania when called ibto service as stated. Since the Revolutionary War has lived in Augusta County, Amhurst County, Pendleton County in the State of Virginia. From Pendleton County in the year 1807 he moved and settled in White County, Tennesee where he now resides and has ever since."
"A John Knowles married Hannah Preston in Pennsylvania on March 21, 1770. We have no information to show that this is our John Knowles. Some stories of the family say his wife was Mollie. Some reports say John Knowles was married before he came to the United States."
"One story told of John Knowles is related in the Seals History of White County. As a young man, John Knowles was a leader in one of Ireland's Rebellions. The Brittish Army crushed this rebellion and sentenced the leaders to hang. John Knowles and his sister were upstair and saw the soldiers coming for him. His sister tied bed sheets together for a rope and lowered him from the upper story. He escaped to Virginia and never saw his sister again."
"John Knowles died 21 March 1838 at age 1838 at age 89. He was buried in Mt. Pitsgah Cemetary [White County, Tennesee]."
