A biography of Louis H. Kommers, 3-term sheriff of Cascade Co., MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 827 & 828.
Louis was born, 6 May 1870, second of thirteen children of Adolph and Barbara (Longheart) Kommers, natives of Germany.Adolph was brought to the US as a child by his parents, who settled in Green Bay, WI. Adolph volunteered in the 16th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War and saw four years of active service.After the war, he became a pioneer of Minnesota, having one of the first farms in Wright County.
Louis H. Kommers grew up on his father's farm, attended public schools, and began earning his own way at age 17. For a while he was waterboy for a work gang of the Great Northern Railroad.In the Spring of 1890, he came to Montana where he worked for the Cascade Land Company for three years, then made his home in Great Falls, MT, where he was a clerk in several stores.He as employed by the B. and M. Smelter as furnaceman, machinest, and electrician, for fourteen years.Louis was appointed deputy sheriff in 1909.He was elected Cascade county sheriff in 1913, 1915, and 1917.
On 18 Jan 1898, Louis married Miss Lillian Berteshe, born in Michigan, the eldest of eight children of Henry J. and Rose M. (Molthen) Berteshe, the former a native of Buffalo, New York, the latter a native of Michigan. Henry Berteshe died in 1905, age 57.Child of Lillian and Louis Kommers: Clara J.
