KYLE, COIL, KOHN, BABB, MELOY, VANDIKE
I am trying to find the parents of Samuel W. KYLE who lived in Reynolds, Carter, Wayne, Scott and New Madrid counties in Missouri from 1870 until his death in 1927. According to the cemetery book from Hobbs Chapel Cemetery near Puxico, Stoddard Co., MO, Sam died in 1927, the victim of a tornado.
According to the 1900 census, he was born May 1853 in PA. Most census data on Sam, shows he was born in 1853 or 1852. A certain researcher claims that Sam was born Jan 1, 1850, and that he was the son of Samuel D. KYLE of Bucks Co., PA. Evidence does not support her conclusions.
The first evidence I found of Sam in MO is the 1870 census of Logan Township, Reynolds Co., MO. Sam is identified as Samuel COIL age 18 born in PA.He is living with William and Elizabeth VANDIKE and other members of the Vandike family. The Vandike's were also born in PA. It's interesting to note that this same researcher found this census, but she apparently has chosen to ignore where this evidence leads.
Where it leads is to William and Elizabeth VANDIKE and Samuel KYLE age 8, living in Montoursville, Lycoming Co., PA in 1860.William Vandike and Elizabeth are also in the 1850 census of Muncy, Lycoming Co., PA.They have no children of their own in either census, so I believe they may have adopted Sam or become his foster parents. Further research into the court records of Lycoming county may reveal more about this.
Sam's first wife was Mary Alice KOHN, who he married about 1870 in possibly Reynolds Co., MO. I have not found their marriage record in any MO county. However, a certain researcher insists they were married on Oct 15, 1872 in Reynolds Co., MO. Since she will not tell me how or where she found this record, I have to wonder if this date is correct. Also, since their first child was born over a year earlier, you can see why I am suspicious!
Sam and Mary's first child was William Seymore Kyle born Feb 11, 1871 in perhaps Morehouse, New Madrid Co., or perhaps in Reynolds Co., MO. Other children were Queen Victoria, Elizabeth, John Louis, Harry W., Gertrude, and Willie Essie.
Sam's second wife, who he married April 27, 1897 in Piedmont, Wayne Co., MO, was Martha Jane BABB. She was previously married to John H. Moley on Jan 14, 1869 in St. Francois Co., MO.I have a lot more information on John MELOY and on Martha BABB and her parents. I am willing to share!
If anyone is interested in the truth, and in helping me to locate Sam's real ancestors, I hope they will email me at: [email protected]/Thanks for reading this!
