William Lackey married Nancy Agnes Stevenson on November 14, 1775, in Rowan Co., NC [copy of marriage bond on file].

William is found on census and tax lists in Rowan and Iredell Counties, NCIn the census he is seen living near his brothers Thomas and George. We have copies of land grants where we see William enteringland grants in September of 1778, August 1778 and 1802 .In one of the land grants, for his brother George, the surveyor makes mention of the line being next to his father, George Lackey’s line.So we can conclude that George Lackey was the father of Thomas, William and George.

William’s Rev. War service during 1781-83 is documented only in three colonial pay vouchers in the department of Archives and History. We have copies of these vouchers.

George Lackey died in 1808 in Iredell Co., NC and the executors of his estate were his sons, George and William.Thomas is seen listed at the estate sale, purchasing items.
All those listed as purchasers at the estate sale, most were relatives we can verify as being related to our William.

There were two groups of Lackey’s in NC.Unfortunately there were two named William, several named Thomas, three named George and at least two Alexanders.William Lackey who married Elizabeth White left NC and settled in Lawrence County,Alabama, where he died ca1840
His Rev war pension has been posted at various places on the internet and is quit detailed.

His application is dated October 01, 1832 [eight years after the death of our William], and he states he came to Bucks Co., PA in 1772 and then from there to Rowan Co., NC.Near the end of his application, he states he lived in Iredell from the end of the Rev War until1814 when he moved to Maury County, TN and in 1822 he moved to Lawrence Co., AL.

We can account for our William Lackey as living in NC during this period, through census and tax records. Our William’s will was dated May 27, 1820 and was probated in the same year. [Wills, Vol 1 pp 430, 432]In his will he named his wife, Nancy and his children.
There is no mistaking this William for the William married to Elizabeth White.

There are several publications, listing history of the NC Lackey family, and they have listed William, married to Elizabeth White, as one of the three brothers - Thomas, William and George - but that is not correct. It is easy to see how someone could possibly pick up the wrong name....especially when there were so many men carrying the same given name and all listed in the census in the same county.

William Lackey (ca1746 - May 07, 1820) and Nancy Agnes Stevenson (ca 1756 - April 23, 1836) were the parents of ten children. The only children that did not stay in NC were Eneas who died in TN, Amos who died in MS and James who died in TN.Several publications report their son Alexander as living and dying in TN, but we can furnish photo’s of his tombstone, resting in the Lackey Cemetery, Alexander Co., NC, along with documentation for taxes, census, etc.placing him in NC his entire life.
