Those are good points. Sort of gives this a little more urgency when you put it that way.
The best researcher I have known on our lines, without a doubt, was James Howard Lyons, my second cousin on my fathers (Lacy) side.
Howard died in Dec. 1997, the same month my Mom died. It was as odd occrrence, because while I was back home for her funeral, Howard died. Since they lived in the same town, I was able to be both places with the family. I know his wife well. She still lives in KY.
Howard maintained nearly a Library of all the primary documents he obtained from all the counties he visited in both A and NC. i presume that his sons and wife still maintain his Library.
I have the research which he sent to me prior to his death. But, it mostly covers primary lines of Benjamin of VA and his son Phillimon, although there is a lot of the New Kent and Kentucky material involved. Like us, was curious about the Philemon phenomenon, and possible lineal variations.
In any event, he, like myself, was able to determine that much of what we need to know is just not available to us in primary records. The fire essentially took care of that.
Which is why I think it is so important for those of us with such records, to communciate what we have in order to build a primary record index for future generations. It would take some effort, but the pay-off might be worhtwhile to all of us.
I do wonder though, if there really is as much available in source records as some would like us to think. There is only one way to find out, everyone just speak up here and tell us what they have.
Steve.
