Pinel aka Lafrance pioneers
Hi, I am posting the notes that I have for some of my pioneer ancestors, in hopes that they may be of interest to some of you that are doing research on your ancestors.Enjoy, Janet
Descendants of Jean Pinel
Generation No. 1
1.Jean1 Pinel was born about 1590 in Normandie, France. He married Thomasse LaHaie/LaHaye.She was born about 1590 in Normandie, France.
Child of Jean Pinel and Thomasse LaHaie/LaHaye is:
+ 2 i. Nicolas2 Pinel, born about 1610 in Campagnolles (Calvados), Normandie, France; died 18 Sep 1655 in Notre Dame de Québec City, QC.
Generation No. 2
2.Nicolas2 Pinel (Jean1) was born about 1610 in Campagnolles (Calvados), Normandie, France, and died 18 Sep 1655 in Notre Dame de Québec City, QC.He married Marie-Madeleine Maranda/Maraud/Miraud 29 Sep 1630 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, Aunis, France, daughter of Mathieu Maranda and Jeanne Guay. She was born about 1612 in Bourgneuf, Aunis, France, and died 10 Feb 1669 in Québec City, QC.
Notes for Nicolas Pinel:
All five of their children were born in France.
He was a long sawyer (someone that cuts or saws timber into planks) and a carpenter of large works.
Nicolas Pinel is the son of Jean Pinel and Thomasse de La Haye from Champagnolles (near Vire, diocese of Coutances), Normandie. On 05 April 1645, La Rochelle notary Teleuron drew up a contract for Emmanuel Le Borgne (agent of Charles de Menou d'Aulnay), in which Nicolas Pinel enlisted to go to Port-Royal, Acadie for three years, apparently without his family. When his three years were up in 1648, Nicolas most likely returned to La Rochelle, then returned to New France a year or two later with his two sons Pierre and Gilles.Nicolas Pinel is noted at Québec City on 16 September 1650, when he rented a house and land at Cap Rouge (Sillery) formerly belonging to Jean Clement du Vault de Monceaux from Clement's widow, Anne Gasnier (notary Audouart). His wife was still in La Rochelle on 30 June 1651, when she bought some merchandise to send to Canada aboard the Saint-Joseph.On 23 January 1652, Nicolas received a land grant at Sillery from the Jesuits, but apparently remained on his other land after seigneur Louis de Lauzon assured the safety of the colonists there.
Nicolas Pinel was shot by an Iroquois' arquebus (a hand gun used before the muskets). He was buried 18 September 1655 at Notre Dame de Québec.
Nicolas's sons Pierre and Gilles continued to cultivate their father's land and Gilles also worked as a cooper.
Notes about their son Pierre:Pierre and his wife Charlotte Fougerat settled on land adjacent to his father's land at Cap Rouge (Sillery). Pierre bought one arpent of frontage from Gilles Danjou on 16 and 20 March 1662 (notary Audouart), to which he added one arpent of frontage from his father's succession. Pierre and Charlotte had six children. In the 1667 census, the family can be found at the Côte Saint-Ignace in Sillery.
On 13 September 1668, the local court of Québec City found Pierre guilty of raping ten-year-olds Ursule Tru and Genevieve Hayot. He was imprisoned in the conciergerie (prison) of Québec City, but appealed this sentence to the Supreme Council, which opened hearings on 17 September. The Council found that he was "poorly and invalidly tried and judged" and ordered that the depositions of the two girls would stand, while the other witnesses would be re-examined. The girls were to be examined by surgeon Jean Madry and "Dame le Valon," no doubt a midwife. On 01 October 1668, the Council upheld the guilty verdict.Pierre was fined court costs plus 30 livres, one-third to be paid to the poor of the Hôtel Dieu de Québec and the remaining two-thirds to be split by the two girls. He was sentenced to have his head shaved and be beaten with rods by the official executioner in the haute ville and basse ville of Québec City"until his blood should flow."In addition, he was condemned to the prison ships (gaueres) for nine years and was to be immediately put in irons and conducted to the first ship leaving for France. However, he was still apparently a prisoner at Québec City until at least 21 January 1669, given the appeals and activity on his behalf in the Supreme Council (and probably due to the close of navigation for 1668).
On 17 December 1668, Charlotte appeared before the Supreme Council, asking to have some of her cooking utensils and bedding (which must have been confiscated by the lower court) restored to her, not having any others for her own and her children's use. The Council granted her request. Charlotte apparently retreated to her mother-in-law's property at Sillery. She baptized son Francois at Québec City on 09 July 1671, then she and her children disappeared from the colony. It is possible that they joined Pierre in exile, possibly in France.
Charlotte Fougerat died some time between 20 March 1674 and 27 November 1692, either at Québec City or in France. Son André definitely went to France. He was at La Rochelle on 02 March 1686, when he enlisted to go back to the New World for the Compagnie de l'Acadie. After Charlotte's death, Pierre married Marie-Barbe Dupont, who gave him one child. Pierre Pinel died at Sainte Foy on 08 July 1707 and was buried there the next day.
Notes for Marie-Madeleine Maranda/Maraud/Miraud:
This pioneering lady stayed in La Rochelle for 6 years raising her children while her husband Nicolas Pinel worked in New France. He was shot by the Iroquois in 1955. Once again she was left to raise her remaining three sons. Two of the boys were old enough to help her.In 1659 she remarried can be found on 24 Feb 1660 in Québec City with her second husband Renaud Andre and her youngest son Isaac, who was about 13 by now.Renaud Andre died before Madeleine. She died before 11 Dec 1669 when an inventory of her estate was drawn up by notary Duquet.
Children of Nicolas Pinel and Marie-Madeleine Maranda/Maraud/Miraud are:
3 i. Antoine3 Pinel, born 07 Sep 1631 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, France; died Bef. Apr 1645 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, France.
+ 4 ii. Gilles Pinel, born 28 Feb 1635 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, France; died 15 Jan 1700 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC.
5 iii. Pierre Pinel, born 28 Feb 1635 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, France.
6 iv. Pierre Pinel, born 12 Oct 1636 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, France; died 08 Jul 1707 in Ste. Foy, QC.He married (1) Charlotte Fougerat 30 Nov 1662 in Québec City, QC; born about 1638 in Notre Dame de Cogne, La Rochelle, Aunis, France; died Bet. 20 Mar 1674 - 27 Nov 1692 in Québec City or France. He married (2) Marie-Barbe-Anne Dupont 27 Nov 1692 in Québec City, QC; born about 1676 in Unknown, QC; died 22 Jan 1750 in Oka Village, QC.
7 v. Joseph-Isaac Pinel, born about 1645.
Generation No. 3
4.Gilles3 Pinel (Nicolas2, Jean1) was born 28 Feb 1635 in Ste. Marguerite, La Rochelle, France, and died 15 Jan 1700 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC.He married Anne Ledet 02 Sep 1657 in Québec City, QC, daughter of Nicolas Ledet and Isabelle Pineault. She was born about 1631 in Angoulin, La Rochelle, Aunis, France, and died 14 Dec 1700 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC.
Notes for Gilles Pinel:
This pioneer was a young boy when he arrived in New France with his parents in April of 1645.
A twin, Gilles was baptized 28 February 1635 in the parish of Sainte-Marguerite in La Rochelle, Aunis, the third of five children of carpenter and long sawyer Nicolas Pinel and Madeleine Maraud, who were married 29 September 1630 in Sainte-Marguerite de La Rochelle. He is the brother of Pierre Pinel, who married "Filles à Marier", Charlotte Fougerat.Gilles' two younger siblings and his twin Pierre died in France.
The family can be found in the 1666 and 1667 censuses at the Côte Saint-Ignace in Sillery.Gilles is listed with his wife and his four oldest children and two children (Barbe Nepveu and Suzanne Nepveu) from his wife's first illegal marriage to Jean Neveu. Then in the 1681 census he is at Neuville. He was listed as a "tonnelier" cooper by trade.A cooper is one who makes barrels and casks.
Four of his children married into the Constantineau family. This happened a great deal because of the small population in New France (Canada) at the time and the difficulty in traveling to meet new and interesting people.Marriages were usually dictated by the parents and very seldom because of love.
Gilles Pinel was buried 15 January 1700 at Neuville.
Notes for Anne Ledet:
"Filles à Marier", page 195, Anne Ledet was born about 1631 in Angoulins (near the diocese of La Rochelle), Aunis, the daughter of Nicolas Ledet and Isabelle Pineau. She came to New France in 1652 as a single girl.
On 28 January 1653, Anne married Jean Neveu or Nepveu in Québec City.No marriage contract has been found for this couple and it is not known if either spouse could sign their names.
Jean and Anne had two children from this union.
Jetté claims that Jean Neveu or Nepveu died some time before 02 September 1657, when Anne remarried, but this is not the case. The remarriage was the result of the only other thing that could dissolve a marriage in New France: bigamy. It was discovered that Jean had a wife that he had left in France and he was expelled from the colony and forced to return to France. As a result Anne's first marriage being dissolved, she was free to marry again.
On 02 September 1657, Anne married Gilles Pinel in Québec City. No marriage contract has been found for this union, but it is known that Anne's second husband could not sign his name.
The 1666 Sillery census find Anne with her second husband and children from both her marriages.
Anne Ledet or Leodet was buried 14 Dec 1700 at Neuville.
Children of Gilles Pinel and Anne Ledet are:

Generation No. 4
8.Marie-Catherine4 Pinel (Gilles3, Nicolas2, Jean1) was born 07 Apr 1658 in Québec City, QC, and died 13 Jun 1723 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC.She married (1) Denis Masse, (Pierre & Marie Pinet) 17 Oct 1671 in Unknown (presumed Sillery), QC (ct Becquet). He was born 30 Apr 1645 in Sillery, QC, and died Bef. 01 Oct 1676 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC.She married (2) Jean-Baptiste Proulx/Prou 02 Nov 1676 in Québec City, QC, son of Nicolas Proulx/Prou and Catherine Morgue. He was born 13 Nov 1633 in St. Jean Baptiste de Poitiers, Vienne, France, and died 09 Dec 1703 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC.
Notes for Denis Masse, (Pierre & Marie Pinet):
He is 20 years old in the 1666 Sillery census and living with his parents, Pierre Masse and Marie Pinet de LaChesnaye that were married 15 May 1644 in Québec, City. His mother was a single girl ("Filles à Marier", page 251) when she arrived in New France in 1643, this was 7 years before her parents arrived in the new colony.
His mother Marie Pinet de La Chesnaye died at Sillery some time before 11 September 1673, when his father Pierre entered into a marriage contract with Charlotte La Rue, which was subsequently annulled. Pierre Masse died at Sillery between 18 April 1678 and the 1681 census.
Notes for Jean-Baptiste Proulx/Prou:
His father may be Nicolas Prou, that was buried on 4 Jan 1663 at St. Jean of Montierneuf of Poitiers.
-------------------
Born: 13 Nov 1633 in the Parish of Saint-Jean de Montierneuf near Poitiers, France (st-jean-de-montierneuf, v. et ev. poitiers, poitou (ar. poitiers, vienne)
Died: 9 Dec 1703
Jean was married on 20 June 1661 to a certain Jeanne Chabot in France ( St-Didier de Poitiers). They had two children ( Sébastien 21 Jan. 1664, Jeanne, 11 August 1662).
He moves from France to Neuville probably sometime in 1667. According to the official census done in Québec in 1666, there were no Prou's listed as residents of the population, but that does not mean that Jean-Baptiste was not present in Québec at the time. On 16 June 1673, Jean Prou, a "long-sawyer" living in the house of Chadde, and his companion Pierre Jallet contracted to work for Noel Morin, a wheelwright and specialist in the building of cannon carriages . The two were to make "fifty gun-carriage cradles for the rolling gun mounts of the aforesaid cannon." Their salary for the work was to be 150 livres.
According to the research, Catherine and Jean wanted to get married; but don’t forget, Jean-Baptiste was still married to Jeanne Chabot. In 1674, prior to his marriage to Catherine, he asked a friend, (Jean or Gilles) Galipau who was going back to France, to go and see his wife and to give her a letter. Galipau came back with the news that Jeanne was dead.
Nov. 2, 1676, Jean-Baptiste Prou marries Marie Catherine Pinel in the parish of St Francois-de-Sales, Neuville, Québec at the age of 43. Marie Catherine is 18 at the time.

Translation: The marriage of JEAN PROU with JEANNE CHABOT was found in France, but the parents of the groom are not listed. Therefore, the ancestor is uncertain. The 1633 baptism cited here is the date that has been retained by most observers. He would then be the son of NICOLAS PROU and CATHERINE MORGUÉ. A homonym, the son of JEAN PROU and PERRINE AUFRAY, was baptized in POITIERS (ST-HILAIRE-DE-LA-CELLE) on September 11, 1639 (FICHIER ORIGINE). He could be the one, who came to Canada.
