Sally: dau of Lunsford or Samuel LANDRUM???

By Tania Patrick January 02, 2006 at 12:10:28

Greetings:

I have in my possession a couple of pages of LANDRUM research done by a professional researcher hired by my aunt in the 1930s.

I am a descendant of Sally Landrum and James D. (for Dillard)Harrison..not James "P." Harrison as it is ofteninterpreted.(It was just a weird handwritten "D".)

The 1930s researcher quoted these documents below:(in addition to the familiar will of Samuel LANDRUM in 1807 listing the "brothers" and "sisters", whom she interpreted to be his children (brothers and sister of each other). Her note says these may be the children of the Samuel Landrum md. in Amelia Co.,in 1769 to Elizabeth Taylor. She also notes that "Lunsford Landrum, Francis Landrum and William Landrum may have been brothers (to each other and Samuel) and uncles of Sally Landrum....a search of Amelia and or Nottoway Co. may show."

"1807, 11 June, Court of Lunenburg Co., p. 164, Order Book 20. William Landrum, James Landrum, Arthur Landrum, William Hood and Nancy his wife, Richard Hood and Mary his wife, ****against**** Salley Landrum and Elizabeth Landrum, by Jesse Watson, especially assigned by the court their gdn. to defend them in this suit, and Wm. Ellis, exr. of Samuel Landrum, decd. In Chancery. Commissioners apptd to sell real estate of Samuel Landrum decd. and distribute among legatees according to true intent of will.Wm. Ellis, exr., ordered to sell immediately and divide proceeds among the complts. and the infant defendants."

"Sally and Elizabeth LANDRUM contd. 11 Sept, 1807, Court Report dated 7th Sept, 1807. Parties in the chancery suit appeared before Court 17 Aug., 1807.
p. 22 of same order book, gives record of a suit by Elizabeth Landrum, infant, by Lunsford Landrum her gdn. and next friend, against John H. Craddock."
No where here is mention made of a gdn. for Sally Landrum.....most likely because she became the wife of James D. Harrison on September 10, 1807.

I am not familiar enough with most legal jargon to decipher the meaning of "gdn- guardian" here.....but I take it to mean Sally and Elizabeth and the others had lost their father..which would not have been the case if their father was Lunsford. He was "guardian" of Elizabeth on September 11, 1807 and did not die until 1818.Arthur, bro of Sally, was her witness at her marriage..if Lunsford had been her gdn or father isn't it likely he would have been her witness?? I realise there could be exceptions here.

Just some additional food for thought (or for confusion??).... let me know your thoughts on this...
Tania
