Looking for help

My father is Raymond Lapham, he was born in Idaho.We believe his fathers name was Francis Lapham but he died when my dad was about 10.That is the total of our knowledge of his side of the family.To our knowledge we have no other family on the Lapham side.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I could start looking for information.This is my first stab at the genealogy thing.
