Re: Francis Levanway Family by Stephen Monamy
Stephen,
Sorry this is late. I live approx. 7-10 miles from Mt. Mansfield. I shovel snow quite often during our winter months.
Concerning Captain Francois, the only other info I have, that may not have already been reported, is a mention of his name in a list of Private Claims, from the 32 to the 41st Congress, pg 268.There are several lines for LaVarnway.1.LeVanway, Francis, heirs of.2.LaVarnway, Captain Francis, heirs of; NATURE OF CLAIMS, Before referred Feb 27, 1860.CONGRESS; 37th, 2nd Session. PAGES OF JOURNAL, 237.3. Listed after above entries are four separate lines for Tousant LaVarnway, heirs of.
I have two separate reports (Rep #91 and Rep #126 - 34th Congress, 3rd session and 36 Congress, 1st session. In both reports it states Tousant LaVarnway entered in the Company commanded by his father, Captain Francis LaVanway, in Colonel James Livingston's regiment of Canadian Refugees.
Also Stephen, in your genealogical letter to Noreen you listed some of your Haskins. My Paternal grandfather's brother, Joseph LaVanway, married Jenny Haskins, who's ancestry goes back to Johnathan Haskins, Bristol, England. Jennie had a sister Josephine Haskins, and also named her daughter Josephine. I wonder if we have a common ancester. In my Paternal Putnam line, there is also a marriage between Putnam and Haskins.I would have to go into my old records to find it.In my Maternal Straw line, I have our Teresa Straw married to Stewart James Haskins - 1982.
I find genealogy very interesting, and in a number of cases, you can find that you are related to someone, not only in one branch, but also in another branch of the family somewhere in history.
In a message to you, Marcel mentioned the Benways.Although I have not researched this yet, my Ellen Straw (my Maternal Straw lineage) married a Francis Benoit in 1861.Francis was listed as Francis Benoit (Benway).Ellen was born in Stanstead, Que., Can., she was married in NH.
I also became very interested in a historical writing by Gertrude Carpenter Patchin Huff entitled "It Flew Through The Air Singing".When I first read this, I believed it was a typical 'LaVanway tale', that my LaVanway's are known for. However, there was a comment, on line, by a Stephen Gills, Edmond, Canada, who states he is a descendant of Mosierann Livernois, a main charector in Gertrude's writings.Mosierann's father was a Joseph Livernois, who traveled from Florida to Minnesota, I believe in the late 1700's to early 1800's.One of the ways I linked my John LaVanway to Charles Sr. and Charles Silas, is in our own travel's to Minnesota by John's children. So my ears laid back when I saw Minnesota.I am trying to locate Stephen Gill now.Mosierann married a Bennett, another name which I believe is connected with Benoit. For anyone interested, you can Google this on line.
I must take time to tell you a story Stephen, so you will understand why I stated my LaVanways are known for their 'tall tales'.When I was in fourth (4) grade we started to study the history of the American Indian.I became very interested in this subject and could not wait to discuss this with my father.Dad, looking down at me said "Son,
you should be very proud, for you are the last of the Mohegan".So, the very next day, I declaired in my history class, that I, Fenton Ralph LaVanway was the last of the Mogegan.I was laughed out of the class room.An example of one, of many.
I am very interested in a Charles LaVanway, b. 1805, whom married Margaret Worden.I believe they were married in NY in 1830.If anyone has any info on them, would you please contact me.
In closing, Stephen, I agree with you.The LaVanway families are very fortunate to have such outstanding historians as yourself, Marcel Benoit, Paul LaVanway, (I believe there are 2),Kathy Gerrow, Bill Wolfe and many others who have contributed to our history. Also to a lady who left us way to early, a researcher of my own line, Carol LaValley.
