William LeCrone is my great-great-grandfather.I am descended from his daughter, Nancy, who (according to some notes that my deceased mother wrote on her family tree) was a half-brother to Charlie and Otto LeCrone.
I posted the text from William LeCrone's obituary in another forum, and I will post it here as well, for those who might find it interesting. It was published in the Effingham newspaper in April, 1909.I would be interested in finding out any additional information about this family that anyone might have to share.
The obituary is as follows:
Wm. LeCrone Is Dead
Pioneer, Aged 86 Years, Passes Away
Came in 1840 and Has Seen the County Pass From a Wilderness to Its Present State
William LeCrone, of Watson, aged 86 years, the last of the LeCrone brothers who came to this county in 1840, died at the family residence of old age early Wednesday morning.Five brothers came from Ohio in 1840, all of them settling in Watson except Dr. LeCrone, who located in Ewington.Wm. LeCrone first settled on a farm a mile south of Watson and lived on this farm continuously until he retired a few years ago and located in Watson. He saw the country in and about Watson grow from a wilderness to a civilized community, and he played an important part in bringing about these highly improved conditions. He reared a large family and for forty years was one of the sterling characters in Watson's business and religious activities. He was a very quiet and reserved man in all of his relations with his neighbors and with the public.Notwithstanding this, however, he was a man of great firmness and was one of the men who gave to his community that sturdiness of character which has always characterized it.He was so respectful of the opinions and rights of others that he had no enemies and when his neighbors turn out today to lay his remains in the old familiar cemetery they can truthfully say that their community has lost a valuable man.
Mr. LeCrone had been in poor health for one or two years and during the past few months has been too feeble to get out of his home. But two or three of his children are still residents of this county, the others having moved to the west several years ago.His son David, who has resided in Oklahoma the past twenty years, has been with his father for several months and was at his bedside when the end came.Mrs. D. H. Holloway of Mason, a daughter, and Charles LeCrone, a son, are residents of this county. The other children have been summoned and will no doubt be at the funeral, which occurs in Watson at two o'clock this afternoon. The passing of this pioneer will be deeply mourned.Quite a number of the family friends from Effingham will attend the funeral.
