Re: Any Active Lefort Researchers?
My maternal grandmother's name was LEFORT. I've traced the family back in the Lambeth/Southwark area of London to Gilbert, who was born about 1709. All his descendants were barge builders.
Gilbert LEFORT married Mary WILDER in Thatcham BRKs in 1731, and had two daughters who died, one baptised in Pangbourne, his wife's hometown, and one at St Mary Lambeth.
My questions are - did Gilbert originate in Thatcham, as the marriage record doesn't give an alternative home parish? I've seached Thatcham records without finding a baptism for him. He must have moved about 1732 to Lambeth, as his second daughter was baptised there, and both children are buried there.
I'm also interested in the speculation about the name transmuting from FORD, as I have two instances of it being recorded as LEYFORD or LAYFORD. How would it have been pronounced in the 1700s?
