Hello from upstate New York! Am interested in Francoise LATIER.
My father's mother was Minnie Latier/Lateer/Letteer.Her ancestors were among the earlist settlers who lived here in the historic Minisink Valley where NY, NJ & Pa. meet on the scenic banks of the Delaware River in Port Jervis, New York. This area was once known as "The Frontier"...
Minnie Lateer Elston died very young and my father (now deceased)was the baby of his family so knew little about the Latier background history. He was only told the Latiers came over from France and reportedly, a "Duke" or some sort of distinguished gentleman was in the family tree.
Several years ago I was told by another Latier descendant she was taught when the family left France, some came to the new world, others settled in Ireland. She had been told the latter branch had some involvement (possibly founders) with a university in that country. (Perhaps this is where the "Duke" came in)???
The name "LETTEER" appears on my great grandfather's tombstone but my grandmother spelled her name: "LATEER".
"LATIER" was used by most of the earlier settlers from what I can gather from browsing around sites involving the Tri-States area.
Also, recently found a page in Ancestry World Project: "LATEER-LATIER-LETTEER-LITTEER LINES"and the gentleman whose site it was didn't know the family's country of origin. Emailed him but so far have received no response.
Have not started a home page yet but do have documentation I'd be happy to share. Also have photos. Please feel free to email me at:firstname.lastname@example.org.
Likewise, would be enormously grateful for any information people on this thread would be willing to share. Please get in touch.
