I would like to trace the descendants of my grand uncle, Michael Leyden, born April 1857 in Kilfenora, Co. Clare, Ireland. He emigrated to the US but I do not know when he left, where he went to and whether he married and had a family. He could even have returned to Ireland at some stage.
Michael's parents were James Leyden (born c.1819 -died 13 August 1882) & Eliza Maloney. They had 14 children (not all survived infancy) and lived at 2 Main Street, Kilfenora, in what is now the shell of a house next door to Linnane's Pub.
Michael's brothers & sisters were:-
1.Mary (born Dec.1844) 2.Patrick (born Dec.1845 - died young) 3.John (born Feb/March 1847 - died 27 Sept.1875) 4&5.Twins Ann & Margaret (born June/July 1848) 6.Catherine/Kate (born May 1851) 7.Patrick (no.2)- born June 1853 - died 21 Dec 1924) 8.Eliza (born April 1855) 9.James (born March 1859 - died Kilkee, Feb.1938) 10.Joseph (born April 1860) 11.Francis (born Sept/Oct 1861) 12.Jane born March/April 1863 - died 3 Feb 1877)and 13.Honor(a) born May 1865.
Michael's grandfather was Patrick Leyden born c.1781 - died 3 Dec 1832 and buried in Kilfenora graveyard.
Michael's father, James, may have had a sister Jane who married Edward Comber - their grand daughter Jane Comber (my father's 2nd cousin) went on to marry Tommy Sexton from Fintra More, Spanish Point/Miltown Malbay, Co.Clare who, coincidentally, was my mother's uncle.
Michael's brother, James, (my grandfather) had a drapery shop in Kilkee, Co. Clare, where he died in Feb. 1938.
Michael's brother, Patrick, had a drapery shop ("Barry & Leyden) in Ennistymon, Co. Clare. He married Mary Barry and they had 2 sons Patrick (born March 1886) and Jimmy (born May 1889 - died 3 March 1960) who married Ann Malone but had no children to my knowledge. I am told that this is the same Jimmy Leyden that was a drummer in the Kilfenora & Tulla Ceili Bands over many years but I would like to confirm this.
My father, Seamus Leyden, was a National Teacher in 4 Clare schools and he died in Kilkee, Co. Clare in Feb. 1986. My mother Mary (nee Kett from Farrihy, Kilkee)was also a teacher and she died in April 2009.
If anybody can help in identifying the descendants of Michael Leyden in the US (assuming that he did not return to Ireland) or indeed any other descendants of his 13 brothers & sisters above, I would greatly appreciate it.
Finally, if anyone knows of any connection between the Leydens of Inagh (outside Ennis, Co. Clare) and my branch of the Leydens of Kilfenora, please contact me.
