Henry is, indeed the son of: Robert Livingston + Alida Schuyler Gilbert Livingston + Cornelia Beekman Henry Livingston, Sr. + Susannah Conklin Henry, Jr. + Sarah Welles + Jane Patterson
One aunt marries the lt gov of NY, Van Cortlandt, another marries Henry Van Rensellaer, and another marries Petrus Stuyvesant. The family has tenuous connections to Gov. Clinton, and Henry's brother John Henry marries the daughter of Philip the Signer.Henry's sister Helena marries NY Supreme Court Justice Jonas Platt (who first submitted the legislation to survey a route for a canal), and Henry's niece and daughter marry U.S. Supreme Court Justice Smith Thompson. Both Platt and Thompson run for Gov of NY, but lose.Brother John Henry enters Yale at the age of 12, goes to Holland to join the ministry, reunites the Dutch and American branches of the church, and is President of Rutgers when he dies.Henry's grandson Sidney Breese is Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, and a statue of him is in the Capitol rotunda.Other grandchildren are admirals, archbishops, government officials, etc.
There were family stories along the many descendants' lines that tell of hearing Henry read the poem as his own in the first decade of the 19th century.
There are also multiple lines that tell the story of a governess known to both families who heard the poem, asked for a copy, and brought the poem to the Moore family.
Since much of Henry's publishing was anonymous anyway, no one paid any attention to the early publications of the poem. And none of the family saw the books in which Moore's friend gave him the credit or Moore took credit. It wasn't until 1859 that the Livingston family came across a copy of the poem that listed Moore as the author. They were upset, but disinclined to protest because Moore was then about 80 years old, and an icon in the Episcopal church.Henry's family had, like many others, migrated from the Dutch church to the Episcopal, and several were in orders or married to those in orders. It was only a 25 year period before one of the descendants decided to try to fix the matter, and since 1886, the family has tried repeatedly to right this wrong.
The research on my side for this project was full time for 18 months. We have turned this topic inside out, and feel very comfortable with where we are.
