This is a long shot but I am not aware of any family migrating directly from Germany with the surname of "Lawyer". The surname was changed in the U.S.A. or perhaps in England in prior generations. Lohr, Loar, Layer, Loehr, Lower and Lauer are just some of the soundex possibilies.
My family was said to be from "Germany" living near Sugar Creek, Wilmot Stark/Holmes/Tuscarawas area until about 1854. I estamate Frederick (maybe George, Peter, Jacob or some other name that Germans liked to use) and Catherine (POB OH on 1880 census for son Frank) Lawyer were born about 1800-1815 given the ages of their children.
1, Jacob Lawyer 1834 OH (my G-G-Grandfather), married Leah Unknown abt 1855.
2, Mary Lawyer 1837 OH., married Louis Wetzel 1858 Sterling, Whiteside CO IL.
3, William Lawyer about 1845 OH.
4, Frank Lawyer about 1853 OH.
5, Elizabeth Lawyer DOB unkown.
Possable there may have been a Sarah and Nicholas.
At least part of the Lawyer family migrated to Whiteside County Illinois around 1854 with the Wetzel family from Franklin County, Pennsylvania, then Stark County Ohio, the Swearingen and Hurless (Harless) families from Fayette County PA, Harrison County Ohio, then Holmes County Ohio.
The following is from Whiteside County Illinois bio. for Louis Wetzel that married Mary Lawyer. I am of the opinion that it contains errors like Mary's parents real name and where they were from. I tend to think PA is more likely.
