Re: John Long and Mary Haynes
Norma, there is much confusion about the early John Long and Anna who settled in PA. We thought this was the beginning of our line is the US but now are not sure. The DAR closed it because of the confusion.
My direct line I know is from the Rev. George Long who married Nancy Elizabeth Maples, daughter of Josiah Maples. We thought his parents were John Long and Nancy (or Mary) Haynes but two or three researchers have contacted me in the last two years saying, "No, no, John Long and Nancy (or Mary) Haynes went to KY and had no son named George..." So, it has been back to square one and I haven't had time to really work on it. I just don't know and wish someone could straighten it out.
Rev. George Long was in Sevier County TN prior to his moving to McMinn County. He was a minister for 50 years and was said to have died on his way home from preaching the gospel.
There is a will on file for him in McMinn County.
Of his several children, his son, John A. Long, who migrated to Walker County GA prior to 1850 is my line. It comes down to his son, James Riley Long (also migrated to Walker County), to his son, James William Long, to his daughter, Ollie Mae Long who is my grandmother.
I think John A. Long's brother, Moses, is the one who married Rhoda Atchley. I haven't looked at that in a while and would need to check to make sure.
I also think the lady in the historical society in McMinn County is getting some of her facts mixed up.
I'll do some checking and will post a follow up message in a couple of days.
Please do the same if you find anything additional.
