John LONGSTREET III, Speculation on Dates for
". . .John III is from an earlier marriage or relationship as he appears to be substantially older than the others, according to the Estate papers."
His birth date is given as . . .
Longstreet, John Henry, born c. 1796 in Ontario County New York, died Sep 14 1869 in Caledon Twp. Peel Co. Ontario.
John Longstreet was born 1796 in N.J., USA, and diedSept 14 1868 in Caledon twp. Peel Co. Ontario, Canada. They had Samuel, Nancy Ann, Henry A. (the same one as mentioned above in #1), Richard born 1816, (He may have been the witness mentioned in the wedding of Henry), and of course Elizabeth Ann born 1825.
BUT, 1788 WOULD HAVE TO BE THE LATEST DATE THAT HE COULD HAVE BEEN BORN, SINCE HIS FATHER DIED IN THAT YEAR.
But what if there is a typo in the 1861 Census, and John was actually born in 1786?
In 1828 The Adjutant General's Department of Upper Canada ordered the officers commanding each regiment of the province's sedentary militia to submit a nominal roll of the men in their units from 19-39 years of age.
John was attached to the 5th Regiment Gore Militia, 1828, which limits were Esquesing, Nassagaweya, ERIN, Eramosa, and Garafraxa. He was shown as number 73 on the Nominal List of the men between 19-39 inclusive. His exact age is not shown, nor is the precise area in which he lived.
Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, Edited and with an introduction by Bruce S. Elliott, Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford- Deva. Published by Toronto Ontario Genealogical Society, 1995- Georgetown Library. (Also can be viewed National Archives of Canada, not on microfilm so must be viewed there, RG9 IB2, Vols. 29-31)
This is the proof that John Longstreet was indeed in Ontario about 1828, and since he settled in Erin Township, it appears that he was there, in Erin by at least 1828.
1828 - 19 = 1809.
1828 - 39 = 1789.
He could have been slightly older, or 42 years old . . .
1786 - 1828 = 42 years old at the time of the record of Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829
