This took a little time since this branch re-spelled the name as Louthian or in some cases Louthain. The family appears in Chapter 19 of the Louthan files and I can send you the page (19-29) that has these folks, or the entire chapter.
One branch is very interesting for its involvment in the War Between the States.James Hervey Louthan moved west to Davis County, Iowa on the Missouri Line and about 80 miles west of the Mississippi River. (I know this county well as I grew up in the general area and go back every two years or so.I was in Bloomfield in June.) He became a recruiter for the Union Army, but then was asked to become a spy by joining the Knights of the Golden Circle. This was actually a private group with its own agenda of trying to establish a new government.Jim was captured in Missouri and dragged in chains back to Des Moines,Iowa where eventually the real nature of his identity became revealed and he was freed.
The Knights wanted to conquest and annex Mexico and Central America and most of South America. The golden circle was a 12000 mile arc around Havana, Cuba.It began in 1853 after the Mexican Warand by 1860 had 65,000 members including men in President Buchanan's cabinet, most of the Southern Governors, and other prominent men.
Your James B Louthian (1818-1874) was married to Lucy Baker who died in 1848.He then married Susan Debord and they later moved to Kansas.
His son was John William Louthain (1839-) who married Joanna Debord in 1861.They lived in Rich Valley, Smythe Co, VA and when she died, he married Nancy Grubb.
John had seven children who mostly lived in Rich Valley, VA.
I am interested in adding your ancestors to Chapter 19.
I use only years for birth, marriage and death.
You can send me the information on all the children you know of John William Louthian.John lived in Saltville, VA in the 1920 census.
Then
All the grandchildren as much as you can
and the
great grand children and so on.
I will type it up and mail you the pages back.
Thanks for the question as it was challenging and took all of two hours to solve.I added a lot of new names and descendants thanks to you.
