I don't know this for sure, but this family may have been written as Lo, Loe, Loo, Low, Lowe, Lo, Loe.I expect they angelicized the name once they came into the early colonies as many families changed their name by shortening them or dropping or adding a few letters .I have very recently found land records in Virginia and early NC that indicate they spelled their name in the other forms in early Virginia/NC.I think they may be relatives or descendants of Sir Nicholas Loe and Eleanor Arundel, of Somersetshire, England.Eleanor was daughter and co-heir of her father Sir Thomas Arundel. They had at least two children:John and William.NOTE:The Arundel family is also tied into the Wilkes family.
The Lows had dealings with Sir William Brereton and Cromwell.
I am thinking Micajah Lowe of early VA & eastern NC may have been related to them and perhaps he and Thomas Wilkes of Charles City County and Lancaster Co., VA were related.I have found a few entries for Charles Wilks in Charles City Co., VA. In one record he is with Richard Bland and Robert Bolling, William Hunt, MICAJAH LOW, and Richard Bradford.Charles and Francis Wilkes were in eastern NC as well (Albermarle, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Bertie, Chowan, Halifax, Edgecombe Counties).Francis Wilkes d:1744-1745, Inventory dated 5/10/1745, and his wife Grace Unknown?? had at least four sons (all have Rev War records); Thomas m:Mary Conyers (Mary Conyers was the daughter of Richard Conyers and Margaret ARUNDEL!); Francis m:Sarah Sally Holding and possibly several others; James m: Mary Thorogood (she also m:Benjamin Aron Winthrop)(NOTE:James and Mary had 3 sons one who they named MICAJAH Wilks - he m:Onie/Onice Ann "Annie" SAY/SEAY); Isaac m:Elizabeth or Tabitha Branch (Isaac may have had another wife as I have seen Jane or Jean as his wife.John Branch lived in Bladen and Anson Counties just near Isaac Wilkes in Bladen (Isaac is my line)and most had moved to Bladen, Robeson, Anson, Richmond Counties, NC; then most moved to South Carolina and then spread (my line stayed in NC).IMPORTANT:There were some recovered LOST Charles Co., VA records that showed up in an attic and home owners returned them to the court system. In those records, it seems that William, Charles, Francis and John WILKINS are the same as my Wilkes. As a matter of fact later, one of their grandchildren is William WILKINS.My Wilkes are not the same DNA as Francis Wilks of Loudoun Co., VA; and not the same as the Joseph Wilkes who was in New Kent Co., VA.Supposedly one of Joseph's descendants has been DNA tested - not a match to our Wilkes. They claimed they were related to Thomas Wilkes of Charles City Co. & Lancaster Co., but that HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN.I have found several records that link our family to allied families of Thomas Wilkes of Charles City Co & Lancaster Co. but not a definite link to Thomas Wilkes.I have lots of information on many of these old families.Perhaps if we work together, we can find our true ancestors! If you have any comments or information, please add to this forum or send to email@example.com.I hope these thoughts help someone within our research loop!
