Dear Nancy:
Hi!I have some information for you regarding the Lyons. My great-great-grandfather, James Dudley Lyon was Silas T. Lyon's oldest brother.
I have information that goes back further, but I will start with what I can retain from memory:
William Lyon, b. abt. 1811 in Franklin Co., VA, s/o Elisha and Roda (Hatcher) Lyon, m. 21 Oct 1829 in Patrick or Franklin Co., VA (marriage is listed in both locales) Sarah Hatcher, b. abt. 1804 in Bedford Co., VA, d/o Elijah and Sarah (Hale/Hail) Hatcher.William and Sarah (Hatcher) Lyon were first-cousins, Roda (Hatcher) Lyon being Elijah Hatcher's youngest sister.
William and Sarah (Hatcher) Lyon had at least eight children:
James "Dudley" Lyon, b. 1830 in Patrick Co., VA, m. 8 Jan 1852 in Patrick Co., VA, Sarah "Sally" Pendleton, b. 1828 in Patrick Co., VA, d/o Pryor and Mary (Tuggle) Pendleton.
James d. 28 Jul 1862 at Ft. Delaware Prison Camp, New Castle, DE, and was buried at Finn's Point National Cemetery in Salem, Salem Co., NJ.Sally d. after 2 Dec 1867 in Patrick Co., VA (this is the date her husband's estate was probated.I have no other record of her, but she is probably buried in an unmarked grave near her parents).Dudley and Sally had four children:Euel G., Lucinda Jane Lyon (Williams), Jathina "Patience" Lyon (Hooker), and James "Rufus" (my great-grandfather).I am descended from Rufus and his wife, Frances Ellen "Fannie" (Goode) Lyon. She was the daughter of Jonas and Julianna (Goode) Goode (her parents were first-cousins).Rufus and Fannie had the following children:William "Will" Simpson Lyon, Everlena "Lena" Jane Lyon (Handy), Lucinda "Lucindy" Tucker Lyon, James Elma "Elmer" Lyon, Albert Jonas Dudley Lyon (my grandfather), and Novia Gay Lyon (Smith). Also, I call James Dudley by his second name since the other Jameses go by their second names (it is easier to keep them separate in my mind).
Elijah Lyon, b. 2 Mar 1832 in Patrick Co., VA, m. 24 Sep 1858 in Patrick Co., VA, Emily "Milly" Hubbard, b. 2 Feb 840 in Patrick Co., VA, d/o Benjamin and Emilia "Milly" (Conner) Hubbard.Elijah and Milly had two children:Columbus Greenville Lyon who m. Alminta Dalton, and Elizabeth Lyon (DeHart).Elijah Lyon d. 17 Aug 1862 from measles, and his death is recorded in Patrick Co., however, he may have died while in camp near Bonsack, VA, as he was enlisted at that time and there was an epidemic in camp at that time. After Elijah's death, Milly m. 20 Aug 1866 in Patrick Co., VA, John Wesley DeHart, b. 13 Feb 1831 in Patrick Co., VA.John had been m. to Amanda Jane Akers, but she died leaving him w/at least two daughters, Lucinda Ellen DeHart (DeHart) and Nancy S. DeHart.John and Milly had at least one child, Angeline DeHart (Lee).
Silas T. Lyon, b. abt. 1834 in Patrick Co., VA, m. 6 Apr 1865 in Patrick Co., VA, Caroline Griffith, b. 1840 in Patrick Co., VA, d/o John C. and (?) Griffith.Silas and Carolina had the following children:Exony E. Lyon (Smith), Levona M. Lyon (Collins), George W. Lyon m. Ida Griffith (first-cousins), Martha H. Lyon (Smith), James A. Lyon, Sarah Alberta Lyon (Barton), John William Lyon m. Sallie Sanner, and Mary Dove Lyon. All children are listed as b. in Patrick Co., but several of them may have been b. in WV because Silas and Caroline had moved there several years after the war (however, Silas often came back to Patrick Co., VA).Silas' middle name is listed in some Patrick Co. records as Tilbert, however, many of his descendants claim it was Tazewell, "Taz" for short.I have conflict information regarding his death, one source states that he d. 1886 in Raleigh Co., WV, and another source claims that he was still alive in 1907.Caroline m. (2) abt. 1904 in Wallowa Co., OR, George Washington Carper, b. 7 Apr 1831 in what was then Monroe Co., VA (now WV).This was his second marriage, too, his first being to a Phipps.Caroline d. 23 Jul 1914 in Promise, Wallowa Co., OR.
Julia A. E. Lyon, b. abt. 1837 in Patrick Co., VA, m. 18 Dec 1879 in Patrick Co., VA, James Washington Richardson, b. 6 Mar 1813 in Pittsylvania Co, VA, s/o (?) and Lucy (?) Richardson. They had no children, however, this was James second marriage, the first being to Sarah Bolling (Boling/Bowling), b. 15 Sep 1813 in Patrick Co., VA, d/o Gabriel and Elizabeth (Tuggle) Boling.James and Sarah were m. 30 Dec 1834 in Patrick Co., VA, and had eight children.Sarah d. 18 Oct 1877 in Patrick Co, VA.James d. 2 Apr 1903 in Patrick Co., VA.I have no other information on Julia except in some censuses she is listed as Alyson, even though on her birth record she is listed as Julia Alyerson E. Lyon.
William Lyon, b. 8 May 1838 in Patrick Co., VA, m. 17 Jan 1861 in Patrick Co., VA, Louisa Bryant, b. abt. 1843 in Franklin Co., VA, d/o William and Elizabeth (?) Bryant.William d. abt 1861 in VA from measles (possibly near Bonsack, VA).William and Louisa had a daughter, Sarah M. Lyon.Louisa m. (2) oon 23 Dec 1862 in Patrick Co., VA, Pryor Pendleton, b. 1784 in VA, d. 22 Aug 1863 in Patrick Co., VA (he was the father-in-law of Dudley Lyon), there were no children from this union.Louisa m. (3) a Mr. Jefferson, and they had two or three children, but I cannot find my information regarding that family right now.
Lucinda Frances Lyon, b. 1839 in Patrick Co., VA.She committed suicide by hanging herself, but I have no record of her death date.
Martha J. Lyon, b. abt. 1841 in Patrick Co., VA, no record of her after the 1860 Smith River District Census for Patrick Co., VA.
Tazewell H. Lyon, b. abt. 1844 in Patrick Co., VA, no record of him after the 1860 Smith River District Census for Patrick Co., VA.
It could be that Martha and Tazewell d. from the measles, or that Tazewell enlisted (however, I cannot find a record of him). There is no record of their births in the county records, either, just listed in William's household in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.
Also, I would like to note that my records reflect that Exony E. Lyon, oldest daughter of Silas T. Lyon and Caroline Griffith Lyon (Carper), was m. 22 Jul 1883 in Patrick Co., VA, to a James S. Smith who was b. in Franklin Co., VA.James' father is recorded as J. J. Smith of Franklin Co., VA, on the marriage register.
Please let me know more about Martha Hebernia!I had her listed in my records as Hebernia w/a notation that her first name might be Martha, but I was never sure.
I also have other information regarding Lyon ancestors and descendants that I would be willing to share. All records are gleaned from the internet or the courthouse in Patrick Co. (unless the people are known to me, then I got the info straight from the horse's mouth).I currently live in Patrick Co., VA.
I hope this was helpful, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Lynne B. Howell
