THARP , Dr. Bernard John Stanley 1918 - 2010 Bernie Tharp passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Thursday, April 15 at the age of 91. Bernie left this world as steadily as he lived, meeting each day with uncommon grace, humility and courage. He embodied the words husband, father, grandfather and friend, and brought joy to all of those who had the privilege to know him. Bernie was born in the Scottish Nursing Home in Calgary to loving parents Ernest and Florence Tharp. At the age of nine his beloved brother and lifetime friend Raymond was born. He grew up in Scarboro, attended Sunalta School and Central High School. After graduation he joined the Navy becoming a coder and petty officer doing escort duty aboard Canadian corvettes in the North Atlantic. In 1943 while stationed in Sydney, Nova Scotia he met and married Ada Ione MacAulay to whom he was happily married for forty-nine years until her death in 1992. After the war he became a doctor of Optometry at the University of Toronto before returning to Calgary. His father, E.S. Tharp ran Consolidated Optical which made Bernie the second generation in the optical business. He started his practice in the Greyhound building prior to founding Chinook Optometric and Chinook Optical, and spent many years on the Board of the Alberta Optometric Association. He practiced optometry until the age of eighty-five and continued to work at Chinook Optical until he was ninety-one. Bernie believed in volunteering and served as president of the Downtown Lions Club. In 1973 he became a member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South, serving as president in 1982 to 1983. Bernie had a passion for horses and was a member of the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol, Canadian Cutting Horse Association, Alberta Quarter Horse Association, president of the Alberta Light Horse Association, and after thirty years of service became an Honorary Life Member of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. In 1997 he married Jean Cowie and they enjoyed twelve happy years together. Bernie was the adored grandfather to Anna Mandelkau Tharp, and the loving father to Biba Tharp and Sydney (William) Pieschel. As well, he leaves his treasured wife Jean Tharp, his only brother Raymond S. Tharp, Melissa Tharp, Linda (Tony) Tse, Bill (Jocelyn) Tharp and Ian (Alana) Tharp, and his stepdaughters Susan (Geoff) Stanbury and Judi (John) Uphold.
