Daniel or Donald Mcgregor, 1780, Caithness, Scotland
One of my ancestors was Daniel McGregor who married Margaret Primrose in 1800 at Dalmeny, Midlothian, Scotland. They were both listed as servants in Craigiehall (near Cramond/Dalmeny) at the time of their marriage. Daniel McGregor died at Cramond Bridge 7 November 1853 (Ref: 679/5/26).
They had the following known children, all at Cramond: Janet Robertson McGregor 30.11.1800; Helen Watson McGregor 21.8.1803; Isabell McGregor 2.2.1806; Anne Wright McGregor 9.6.1808; Elisabeth McGregor 17.6.1810; Alexander McGregor 3.7.1814 and Margaret McGregor 20.6.1819 (Ref: 679/3).
According to the 1851 census, (at Cramond Bridge, Dalmeny Parish), Daniel was born in Caithness and he was 70 at the time of the census and a farm servant. However, a search of the OPR Index of Births/Baptisms for Caithness (1789-1770) for the possible birth of Daniel McGregor had no entries for Daniel, although there were several Donald McGregor entries and 'Donald' is supposed to be interchangeable with 'Daniel'. This was done by a researcher in Scotland but she did not give me a list of these Donalds. If Daniel & his wife used naming patterns, then his parents were possibly Alexander and Helen. I would be grateful if anyone could supply me with some possible names from Caithness. And if anyone has instances of a Watson, Wright or (the very common) Robertson in their Caithness McGregor database, I would be interested in that information too.
Does anyone have information on the origin of the Caithness McGregors? Caithness is quite far from the highlands where the McGregor clan was originally based- did one particular family or group move to Caithness at some time to begin this branch of the Mcgregors?
I am descended through Ann Wright McGregor who married Robert Pye in Midlothian in 1826 and I'd be happy to share information. Many of this line went to Australia and New Zealand in the mid 1800's and several girls along these lines were named 'Ann McGregor + surname'.
