Re: Alexander McGregor 1754-1828
Hi Ann, I'm afraid that there are many Alexander McGregors from Scotland and the Parish Records were not very reliable for recording every birth, death and marriage. My Family Tree is littered with Alexanders and John McGregors but they all came from the same area where they were crofters on large estates (originally owned by Barons and Clan Chieftains). Also, most McGregors were Highlanders, which might make your Alexander easier to trace in Edinburgh because records were better there. If there are any family stories about the origins of your Alexander, now is the time to try and root them out because you have a difficult task ahead. There are branches of the McGregor Clan from various parts of Scotland and some put down roots in Northern Ireland because of various fights in Scotland. Try the Clan Gregor website and see if it gives you any ideas of where to look next. Passenger Lists from ships of the time are accessible- you have the free Ellis Island ones to start with. They often list the place a person originated as well as their port of departure in the UK. For instance I have found my James McGregor and his family arriving in New York and tracked them through several Censuses to Boston, MA where they disappear! Good luck!
