McDowell County NC James, Charles Mackey

I seem to have muddied the waters a bit here in asserting that Charles Mackey (1806-1895) was a son of James Mackey.I have no definitive proof either way.I do have several sources that indicate he was born in 1806 in what is now McDowell County NC.If anyone knows who were the parents of Charles Mackey I would like to hear from them.
In the meantime Ill provide here the information and sources I have, in the hope that others might be stimulated to do the same.

C."

(Polly) Jordan...".Which seems to indicate that Mr. McLean believes that Charles was the son of James, or his brother Thomas.

Jane (Jennie)Of these 10 children Mr. McLean has more information on Lt. James Mackey. On July 10, 1776 the family was driven from their homes by Cherokee Indians and "the next day he enlisted under Cap. John Hardin and Cap. William Moore and Col. Charles McDowell and served in the battles of Briar Creek, Stono, Cane Creek, Eutaw Springs and Ramsuer's Mill where he was shot through the body and carried from the field".After the War he married Rebecca Scott, and in 1805 he moved to Rutherford Co TN ( a date which would seem to eliminate James as a potential father for Charles, who was born in McDowell County NC in Aug 1806).In 1815 James and Rebecca and their five children and two of James' brothers (one was John Jr) moved to near Clarksville MO.

Mackey was born in McDowell County, October 9, 1845, the son of Charles and Mary Ann Jordan Mackey. It is believed that his grandfather was James Mackey, son of John Mackey..."

YET ANOTHER POSSIBILITY:In a submission to "Old Buncombe County Heritage" by Sarah R. Beatty entitled "The Life and Times of Mary Ann Jordan" it is stated that "Mary Ann's father in law, John McKey died in 1833 and willed Charles his farm.Charles' mother Eleanor farmed and she and her girls spun, wove cloth and made clothes...".Ms. Beatty cites as her source "personal knowledge".According to the 1860 census of McDowell County Charles (53) and Mary (48) Mackey and their nine living children were next door to John Mackey 60 (who had no real or personal property) and, the best I can decipher it, Elmira Mackey, 82, who owned real estate worth 1250 and personal property of 5000.
