My research indicate that 'Mading' and 'Madding" are of the same family.I have personal signatures that show my line can be traced as 'Mading' all the way back to Champion Stewart Mading who came to Illinois in 1826-1828.However, Champion had a son, Jasper MacDonald Madding, who used the 'Madding' spelling. In the case of illiteracy, a third party scribe may have used the double-d spelling. Also, tax collectors at times recorded the name with the double-d spelling.
For whatever its worth, below, I have copied a page from my father's journal. This was recently discovered after my mother died.My father died in 1978.
