John Mattox in 1900 census Newton Co., Miss. - born 1842 Georgia
I'd like to identify "John Mattox" who appears in the 1900 census of Newton County, Mississippi. He was widowed, born in April 1842 in Georgia, and living alone as a day laborer. Does anyone know who his family was? Where was he in previous censuses?

I'm searching for John B. Maddox/Mattox who was born in 1842 in Georgia and came to Coffee County, Alabama with his parents Matthew MADDOX & Martha BOWDEN (Bowdin/Bowdoin) in the 1850s.
John B. MADDOX married Mary E. POWELL in 1859-1860, daughter of Jacob & Emily POWELL. John B. served in the Confederacy and was still in Coffee County at the time of the 1870 census (although only he, his wife and one daughter are found in census images today -- 4 pages of this census are missing in the Elba Beat!).
John is found as "J. B. Mattox" in the 1866 Alabama state census, with 1 male under 10, 2 females under 10, and himself and his wife aged 20-30. One of the girls would be daughter Martha E., age 9 in 1870; the boy would be son John Jacob MADDOX, born in the 1860s, who married Minnie Lee Largins/Loggins/Lodgins in 1891 in Butler County, AL, and settled in Crenshaw County, AL.
We've had a difficult time finding John B. & Mary E. Maddox after 1870. Some researchers say that 6 of Matthew & Martha Maddox children's went to Mississippi about 1873, and some state that John B. died in or about 1890 in Texas or Mississippi .... but no one has presented any proof except quoting other people's family trees.
John Mattox of 1900 Newton Co., Miss., looks very likely to be a match for our John B. Maddox. If you have him in your family tree and can prove or disprove his identity, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks for any help!
Annie C.
