Hi,
I was searching out the name Madill and came across your message. I'm also very interested in finding out about the origins of Madill, and like you have come up with conflicting views. My grandfather received a letter, of which I have a copy, from a Mrs Olive Madill in 1951. In the letter she says that 3 brothers came from France as Huguenot refugees to Ireland at around 1694-5-6. They were refugees because of religious persecution. One went to Co. Cavan, one to Co. Monaghan and one to Co. Down.
My grandfather wrote in a letter in 1951saying that a Mark Madill told him the same as the above. The brother in Co. Cavan settled in a place called Ashfield near Coote Hill. The one in Co. Monaghan was near Newbliss and the third who went to Co. Down only remained a short time and went to a place "between the States and Canada". The Co. Down brother is probably the start of your Family tree in Canada. Also quite a number of the Co. Monaghan Madills emigrated to New Zealand.
My grandfather and grandmother emigrated to Austalia in 1914. There are other Madills in Australia who belong to a different branch of the Madills. My Grandfather said in his letter that 2 of his uncles went to America James and Thomas.
