Thanks for the response.I don't think we are related either, since the story goes that one of my grandfather's ancestor's was a pirate who was thrown out of France.
Fact or fancy, I don't know.What I do know is that Maese (meaning Master or Teacher) appears in the opening chapters of Don Quixote.
I have also spoken with one person who had a grandfather from Alsace whose last name was also spelled Maese.
There is also the possibility that the name is Dutch Maes and is entirely plausible since my grandfather came from the area around Naples.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since my Great Grandfather, who I believe was named Rafaele is a dead end for me.
