MAHEU in France before 1605
I am very new to genealogy and would appreciate your advice. A distant relative has done extensive research, tracing my US family name (Mayo - NY, MA) through Canada (Maheu - Quebec) to Mortagne Perche, France in about 1605. If I recall correctly, he said that it was difficult to go back further because most church records were burned during the French Revolution. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Aside from hiring someone in France to look into this further, is there any further research I can do from the US to identify earlier French ancestors? Thank you/Merci.
