The youngest sister of my gg-grfather Patrick Cummings/Cummins was Ellen Cummins, b. Co. Carlow, Ireland 1861. In 1881 in Providence RI she married Thomas Mahon, b. abt 1857. The marriage record gives his parents as James and Rosanna, and states he was born in Ireland and was a laborer.
I haven't positively found him in any census, but I think this is him in 1880 - 1880 FEDERAL CENSUS, New York City, NY: 424 W 56th St. James GRACE, mar, age 35, b. IRE, Rock Blaster Bridget GRACE, Wife, mar, age 39, b. IRE, Keeping House Thomas MAHON, Bro-Law, single, age 22, b. NY, Works In Paper Mill, parents b. IRE
In 1880 Ellen's oldest brother George Cummins lived next door at 422 West 56th street, which makes me think this might be the Thomas she married. In 1880 Ellen was already living with other siblings in Providence.
The situation then becomes very mysterious - We can find no other definite records of Thomas Mahon.
After the marriage in 1881, the next record that can be found of Ellen is in Jan 1908 in the obituary of her brother Patrick. In the obituary she is called MISS ELLEN CUMMINGS. This is the name she used in every one of the many records we have found for her from 1908 through her death in June 1920. She cannot be found in the 1900 or 1910 census. On her death certificate as ELLEN CUMMINGS, she is listed as a widow, and her husband's name was given as THOMAS CUMMINGS (informant was her sister who was very conscious of family appearances). We have not found any record of a second marriage for Ellen, or found any other reference to a Thomas Cummings.
There is a Thomas Mahon in a lunatic asylum in Essex Co. NY in 1910, age 50, married, b. Ireland, hatter. Have no idea if this is our Thomas!?!?
So... Where were Thomas Mahon and Ellen Cummins Mahon Cummings from 1881 to 1908? What happened to Thomas Mahon? Did Ellen actually marry another Thomas with the same name as her own maiden name? Why was she listed as MISS in the 1908 obituary?
Help - any clues or hints that may help would be appreciated? Do you have a Thomas Mahon that is missing part of his life - let me know!
