Yes,this is a definate possibility. And see what you'll find if you look further.
Benjamin Majory, born April 20,1678 in Newbury, Essex, Mass. to Goerge MAJEIRE(Major). Goerge was born in the Isle of Jersey, Channel Islands. His father was Benjamin Le Massurier!
In my Majury line the name is said to be Huguenot in origin and came from Normandy. I have found my grandfathers birth registration as MAGUERY in 1878 Co. Down Ire.
My guess is the name is French in origin and as people fleed religious persecution, some going to British Isles others to North America the name underwent various phonetic spelling changes.
