Thomas Makinson - Horwich

I have recently started to trace my family tree, and on my mothers side are the Makinsons of Horwich.
So far I have got back to Thomas Makinson, born 1846, Living with wife Ann at Pendleburys farm in Horwich. They had 6? children, one of which was my great grandmother, Alice.
I seem to have hit a brick wall for further back than this and would appreciate any help.
