This is a synopsis of the post http://genforum.genealogy.com/il/messages/42443.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/il/messages/42443.html

In 1870, my two surnames lived next door to each other.

John Lay 28 ABT 1842 OHIO
Elizabeth Lay 25
William Lay 9
Jane Lay 6
John Lay 3
Sarah Lay 2/12 MONTHS

Jacob Mangus 35 PENN
Sarah Mangus 30
Willie Mangus 10
Emma Mangus 8
Charles Mangus 4
Abram Mangus 26
Samuel Mangus 23

My direct relative is Nancy LAY. She had a child with a Samuel MANGAS in 1871 and 1875 in Logan County, IL. I found a court record for a Samuel Mangus on the Illinois website http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/logansrch.htmlhttp://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/logansrch.html
(spelled differently, of course).

Defendant Date Filed Case # Box Type of Case
MANGUS, SAMEUL 1871 703 5 BASTARDY

This file should solidify my suspicions that Samuel MANGUS, future husband to Elizabeth HOPKINS, fathered my great-grandmother Lizzie MANGAS and her Mary Belle MANGAS. Their picture is on Dead Fred (See link below).
