Dear Sue,I am researching my MANN line which originated in Philadephia, PA, moving shortly onward and settling in Virginia (then referred to as Augusta County, VA and now known as Monroe County, W. VA). I have information in my genealogy which shows we are related, your Archibald descending from Adam MANN (b.1771 m. Elizabeth YOUNG in 1808). Your Archibald married Elizabeth STEPHENSON, 1838 ... marrying a 2nd time to Nancy HARVEY, 1812). My MANN line (Archibald's MANN line) originated in Germany (Palatines/Lutherans) and the original settlers came to PA/VA on the Pink Plaisance which landed in 1738.My father always assumed he was English.I think this may have been his impression since the MANNs did mary into the Thompson, Ballard and Callaway lines which were English/Scots. The original MANN was George (Jerg) Bernhardt MANN b.1701 in Huffendardt, Baden-Wurtenburg Germany d. 15 Mar 1769 m. Anna Margaret (?).I descend from George MANN as follows: Jacob (1725); Jacob, Jr. (1745);Moses (1805); Elias (1827); Walter (1868); Walter (1917).Many of this MANN line did move to Ohio. However, my family remained in VA, Kentucky and then moved to Nebraska and on to California.Connected to these various MANNs are the maternal surnames of NYSTEDT, THOMPSON, BALLARD, SWINNEY, KESSINGER, CALLAWAY, STEP, MILLER, MUELLER. The ship's passenger list (Pink Plaisance) noted Jorg as MOHN, not MANN and his wife and son were referred to as MAN.However, they were a family, only registered under different surnames by mistake.According to other records, the MANN could have originally been MAHR, but as you know, many names change from their original over time.I hope this is helpful. You can e-mail me at [email protected]
