Colonel John Mann Resigned Comission 1814
I visited the OHS library this year and obtained a copy of this letter of resignation in Othniel Looker’s documents. TM.....
Miami County Aug 24, 1814
To the honorable Othniel Looker Esq, Speaker of the Senate and Commander and now Chief in the State of Ohio-
Enclosed I transmit to you my commission as a Colonel commanding of the 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade and 5th Division of the Ohio Militia for the purpose of your receiving my resignation. My reasons for doing this are first, because I have been so unfortunate as to almost be deprived of my hearing, so far that it is impossible for me to understand any person when talking to me unless he speaks very loud and distinct, and also my long services in the line of officers, which has been for about 10 years.I hope you, however (as I have wholly declined serving any longer) will take this into consideration and suffer me to withdraw from a post in which I am no longer able to act with consistency to myself and my country.
In doing so you will much oblige your friend and very humble servant.
John Mann Colonel Commanding the 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade and 5th Division of the Ohio Militia
