Hello possible fellow Mannings. I'm trying to trace down the validity that my grandfather changed his/our last name sometime in the 1930's/40's. From stories I've heard: One set (grandfather as a boy) lived in MN, possible homesteaders, vague if they moved to or from Canada from MN, then after MN to California. What I do know and have confirmed is that He moved to Louisiana sometime in the 40's as my father, uncle and aunts talk about a couple places they lived. I confirmed by high school graduation lists. My grandfather's name when I knew him was Edward Alfred Kayne. Any research I've done comes up with not much (aside from long prison sentences for members of the 'Edward Kayne' gang in 1934) SSN issued from Louisiana, but not necessarily born at issuing state since he would have been in 30's or 40's when they first came out. I then went to census records for Minnesota when my grandfather would have been a minor for variant spellings of Manning and Kayne along with multiple members of the family. Many hours scouring census records, newspapers, online books, etc. I've compiled the following information, but have no idea if I'm barking up the wrong 'tree' (pun intended). Edward had a brother Leo, sister Irene, and possibly a sister Helen. Father Joseph and Mother Mary. I found h Joseph P Manning b. abt 1874, w Mary Manning b.abt 1885 (possibly Maiden name DAVIS, b. Iowa), Joseph R b.abt 1906, Edward b.abt 1908, Irene b.abt 1915.
1920 Census and 1930 Census Ramsey County, Minnesota Joseph and Joseph P b. 1875 Minnesota F: Canada M: Canada Maryb. 1885 IowaF: IowaM: Canada
Census shows Jas. Manning Father born Massachussets, Mother born England; Mary Manning Father and Mother born Ireland
History of Minnesota at time and proximal location of Edward's birth was the construction of the North Pacific Railroad through the area. One book has a J.H Manning in a list of workers due some small amounts of money.
The history of the area of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Acadia, Canada: If my Grandfather's Grandfather is Jas. and born abt 1827 inCanada, and his father born in Mass, then it is likely Jas (James?)'s father or even grandfather went during the time of English displacement of French and Indians and settled temporarily.
Seeing as my grandfather gave little information, aside from saying he was a cameraman and ship building in California, but no proof to where he lived between 1920 and 1950, I am seeking other members of the Manning line if they have any information to see if what I've pieced together is valid.
