The name is most commonly of German heritage. There can be variations of the spelling due to pronounciation. In Germany, Manns is pronounced differently and the spelling can vary as: Maants, Mants and Muntz. When looking at census records be sure to keep an open mind (and eye!!) for any variation. The census takers spelled it the way they heard it and that is what creates so much variety. My particular branch of the family was from Prussia.
