Rhonda, Good evening. It's not unusual to find changes in surnames. Many records are recorded in written form from verbal interviews, meaning the writer recorded what they thought they heard the name was, not necessarily the correct name.Additionally, sometimes the names of girls changed when the marriage license was recorded from verbal interviews with the groom and his witnesses when he applied for a marriage license.Additionally, sometimes names written were illegible and changed when recorders transcribed records from one document to another. I guess some people changed their names if they wanted to separate themselves from a bad family situation or for some other unknown reason to keep people from associating an embarassed family member from a 'bad apple'.
For certain, you will find very quickly that the most embarassing generation that has ever lived, is alive today... sorry. I hope this helps. My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org Contact me anytime and I'll email you a copy of my research. Regards, Jimmy Mansell
