John, This is all that I have on Manwell or Manuel. Alan
Descendants of Peter Manwell
Generation No. 1
1.CAPTAIN PETER1 MANWELL was born 1761, and died 03 Dec 1824 in New Orleans,Orleans,Louisiana,USA.He married BETSEY DOW 24 Nov 1785 in Jericho,Chittenden,Vermont,USA, daughter of RICHARD DOW and MARY SAUNDERS.She was born Oct 1767 in of Bow NH, and died 1839.
Notes for CAPTAIN PETER MANWELL:
In "The Book Of Dow" it has that Betty Dow married Peter Manwell, Revolutionary veteran and pioneer of Jericho, VT.
In the 1790 Bow NH census on the same page as Richard Dow is an Anthony Meanwell with 1 male 16 and up, 2 males under 16, 1 female. Would this be Manwell, father or brother to Peter?????
In the 1790 Jericho VT census was Peter Manuel with 2 males 16 & over, 2 males under 16, 2 females.
In the 1800 there is no listing for Peter Manwell or Manuel. In the Jericho census the only name close was for a Peter Merril with 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26-44.
In the 1810 Richmond VT census there was a Peter Manwell family with 1 male under 10; 2 males 16-25; 1 male 45 and over; 1 female under 10; 1 female 26-44; 1 female 45 and over.
In the 1820 Richmond VT census there was a Peter Manwell family, but the ages might not fit this Peter, 1 male 10-16; 1 male 45 and over; 1 female to 10; 1 female 16-26; 1 in agriculture. This family is beside Stephen Manwell in the census.
In the "Roster War 1812-1814" State of Vermont is a Peter Manwell (or Manuel), Lieutenant, Richmond. Volunteered to go to Plattsburgh. September, 1814, and served in Capt. Roswell Hunt's Company, 3 Regt. (Tyler's)
In the History of Jericho VT it has a Peter Manwell listed under the freemen of Jericho in 1801.
In Chapter XXVI History of the Town of Richmond, from the internet www.rootsweb.com, under the heading of War Of 1812-15 is "Captain Manwell, who enlisted as Lieutenant".
"Baltimore Patriot and Mercantile Advertiser" Tuesday, 14 Dec 1824, page 2; In New Orleans, on the 3d ult. of a Marasmus, Mr. Peter Manuel, aged 64 years- he was from Burlington, in the State of Vermont; which place he left in the month of may last, in search of his son, whom he found on the River Brassos, in the Province of Texas, in a very impaired state of health, and brought him to this city, where he was waiting the departure of a vessel to New York; that they might return to their home. The fatigues of his journey, together with an ulcerated leg, so exhausted his vital powers, that he survived but a short time after his arrival in this city. He has left an afflicted family to mourn for one whose affection for his child has brought down his grey hairs to the grave. The appearance of Mr. Manuel, was that of an honest man and the christian; he was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and commanded a company of Vermont Volunteers, at the battle of Plattsburg, in the late war.

In a "Biographical Souvenir of the Counties of Buffalo, Kearney, and Phelps in Nebraska" Chicago, F.A. Battey and Company, 1890 it has; "Safford Towers was bornand reared in the town of Richmond Vermont, and there met and married Eunice Manwell, daughter of Stephen and Dulcina Manwell, of that place, where she was born. From that point he set out in 1854 with his family for the Pacific coast, with the intention of making his future home in California. This was a hope, however, never to be realized, for he died on the passage and his family remained on the coast only six months, returning thence to Vermont, where the two children, Henry Safford, the subject of this notice, and Frances, now the wife of A. W. Edwards, grew up, and where the latter, with her mother, continues to reside."
In the "Vital Records of Millbury Massachusetts" on heritagequestonline.com it has the marriage of Safford and Eunice on July 7, 1846; Towers, Safford (son Robert and Lucinda age 28) & Manwell, Eunice W. [V. in int.] (daughter Stephen and Dulcna, age 32).
The only record I find in Richmond for Safford was a quit claim deed, 8:317, Safford Towers and Eunice V. Towers his wife, in consideration of the sum of fourteen hundred dollars of Mason Manwell, release the title to the estate of (Lincoln?) Manwell which they had by virtue of a will from said (Lincoln) Manwell.
