Dear Blanche,

Dear Blanche,

Below is a redacted portion of the text regarding the parents ofAeltye
Stoothoff, who married as her first husband John Mapes. Please note that the
title of the mss is "The Kouwenhoven, Stoothoff and Verbryck Descendants of
Aeltie Cornelse Cool." I mention this again as you will see generation
numbers attached to these descendants and these numbers reference the
generations from Aeltie Cool, who is #1. In this particular family, we see
that Aeltye (Stoothoff) Mapes is both a 6th and 7th generation descendant of
Aeltie Cool. We can provide the exact lineage another time, should this
Mapes/Stoothoff connection prove to be yours. As I have noted, this
compilation is dated 1995 and composed by Dorothea McCowan, June McCowan and
my self. Presently there are no copies available at any library. But we hope
to remedy that sometime in the future. If you have any questions about the
sources cited in the text, please do not hesitate to ask. Most are standard
sources you will no doubt be familiar with. One, the Journal of John Baxter,
is more obscure and only available at the Brooklyn Historical Society (which
is presently closed). Suffice it to say that he was a close relative to
these Stoothoffs.

As I had mentioned in my earlier email, the Mapes lived at first in
Flatlands, Kings County, Long Island. As you see from Baxter's Journal, in
the Fall of 1795, they sold their place in Kings County and removed to New
Jersey. Five years later, John Mapes is drowned. The one son they had,
Michael Mapes, was born early in their marriage and he is the only offspring
for whom we have record. But, since there was another seven years that they
were together before John died, it is certainly possible that they had other
children. That they might name one for Aeltye's brother Abraham Stoothoff
would not be impossible. However, if he was the same man as the Abraham
Stoothoff Mapes for whom you find record in 1890/1, he would be quite old.
Perhaps this 1891 Abraham Stoothoff Mapes is a grandson then.

I think these may be very good candidates to be the ancestors you are looking

Heiltje Voorhees acquired a family Bible from her brother Cornelius Voorhees
and she and Wilhelmus(5) continued to enter their family events therein.
There are evidently no marriage records. The Bible today resides in the
possession of their descendant Coddington family, of Lindenhurst, Long
Island and abstracts are available to the compilers courtesy of Florence
Coddington Droge. The family is compiled in the Van Voorhees Genealogy, page
186, and several of the family members are buried in the Flatlands Cemetery.

John Baxter states in his journal on 24 July 1803 that: "Uncle Wilhelmus"
begins to recover above the expectation of All."However, later that year,
on 21 September 1803, the following entry is made: "Died Uncle Wilhelmus
Stoothoff after a long and tedious disease which surpassed the skill of all
medical assistance."In December of the same year, John Baxter takes an
inventory of the estate of Wilhelmus(5) and notes that "...Douwe and John
Stoothoff bought the farm of their Father Wilhelmus Stoothoff for £3300.
