Hello ... The James is the one in the 1880 census that I believe to be my grandfather ... not sure!
My name is Bobby Joe Seales and I am the ALGenWeb host for Shelby County and President of the Shelby County Historical Society.
One of our members gave me your name and e-mail address ... concerning the Massey Families from Tennessee.
My grandfather's parents are a mystery ... his death certificate has "Unknown" for their names. My mother was the youngest of 12 children. He came from Tennessee in the early 1880's and married in December 1882 my grandmother.
His name is James Massey, born (according to his death certificate) December 8, 1859. His birthplace in Shelby County Alabama census either indicate Kentucky or Tennessee as place of birth ... same for his parents.
I have been tracing him and keep finding a James Massey that fit the age from 1850 through 1880 census in Tennessee. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Massey. William was the son of Harbard H. Massey. The Humphrey's County Tennessee Book has some information on Harbard H. Massey ... but does not give much information on William and his children.
My mother's brothers use to say that two of his "old maid" sisters came to visit in the early 1900's, of course they were young and they may have seemed or acted like "old maids" to them.
Do you have any information to help me with this Massey line? Many thanks!
