married Alesey (Ailsey) Smith in Franklin County Jan 2nd,1842. In 1838, there was a Simon Massey that paid the poll tax for John W Massey.
I have found that Simon was the son of Noel Posey Massey from the Pendleton District, SC.
Noel had twin boys named Lion and Sion and Lion had a son named John.
I have found several dates on the birth of John, son of Lion, from 1818 to as far as 1830. If it is the 1818 date, then that's not far from John W's age and they may be the same, or then again he could be Avery Massey's son.
Simon had son named James Ephraim Massey, and he shows up on the census in Franklin Co, then in Forsyth County along with John and family in 1850, and in 1880 in Cherokee County with John. Simon's wife name was Realy and John W and Alesey named their first girl Reeley and they named their 2nd son Charles Simon Massey. I don't know the connection. Ephraim also married in Franklin County to a Mary Sartain. John W Massey, on the 1850 census lists his age as 35, which would have placed his birth in 1815 and he is listed as being from SC.
The issue looks cloudier, but if I were you, I would check the Prudence Massey listed at the bottom of my information. Also, try to see where your folks were living in Franklin County. Here is what I have found about Avery Massey:
In Greenville Co. SC, 1797: a large list of buyers at the estate sale for Samuel Wells included Avery Massey, Job Massey, and David Massey. (SOME SC COUNTY RECORDS, vol. 2, page 182, by Brent Holcomb) Avery Massey was principal, and Job was security for Avery. David Massey, principal, needed no security. This record was labeled as a reconstruction of estate records. Evaluation done in 1804 -1806.

In 1810, an Avery Massey was in Buncombe Co., NC, with a wife and 3 sons and one daughter under 10.
In 1818, the Taxables list for Franklin Co. GA includes an Avary Massy in Captain Turk's District.
A reconstructed census of Franklin County, GA, 1820, listed Avary Massey. The 1827 land lottery has those whose drew for land in the Lottery, "Orphans of Avary Massey". They may have been unlucky with the drawing since I could find no Massey in the list of buyers of Franklin County. Avary Massey was under Captain Caudell's tax list, and all groups were under Captain Turk. In August 2003, (My cousin)J. B. Massey found a record of land in the 28th District, 3rd section, (Catlett's District) so perhaps they did get land, OR this is where they were living.
There was a certificate issued 16 July 1824 from the Sheriff of Franklin Co. GA to John Alexander conveying 50 acres on the waters of Nails Creek which was sold at auction. This was to satisfy a judgment obtained by Robertson and Toney against Thomas Mackey and Avery Massey. (Deed Book B, page 182) From DEEDS OF FRANKLIN CO. The website with the 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery, 28th district, 3rd section:
225. Avery Massey's, or (orphan) Catlett's, Franklin.
There was a Prudence Massey in the 1830 census of Franklin county, GA. Our Joseph was in Fayette Co. AL in 1830. I do not know if there was a connection.
