Matheson's in Canada and Scotland

By Katherine Lostan April 29, 2007 at 09:57:08

Dear Matheson family
I hope you can help me, I have been in contact with both Don Scott and Alice Fairhurst regarding my Matheson roots. Janet Dorn(former Clan Genealogist) and my great-uncle Frank Farquhar Matheson did some research, it has been proven wrong. I am at a loss as to whom I should now ask. I found your paper, Nova Scotia Emigration: Clan Matheson, on line and it had a reference to a Donald Mathesonfrom Benbecula to Little Bras d'or. The following was written by Frank;

Donald MATHESON believed born Perth, Scotland in 1767, died 1850. A Sergeant Major in Militia, farmer in Quinam Puntaig, Nunton, Benbecula. Married in 1788 to Marian MACDONALD, born 1768, died 1854. In 1825 Donald took his wife and five remaining children to Little Bras d’or, Cape Breton island, Nova Scotia, leaving his son Farquhar as a schoolmaster in Benbecula.
Farquhar married born in Benbecula 1805, died 6 DEC 1839, married Marian MACVICAR, born 1806, died 1864-9. After becoming a schoolmaster and meeting Marian, a Rev. Duncan MACLEAN personally brought her to the engagement party at Konc Quien, N Uist. Farquhar is buried at Kilmuir burial ground on Sky- same as Flora MACDONALD. He left his wife and 4 children to work their little farm in Benbecula.
Upon the death of their mother Marian in 1849 John and Donald hearing of the Gold Rush in California they left for Canada. Selling everything they left their sister Marian and brother Alexander in the care of their Uncle MACVICAR in N. Uist wher they remained until 1853 when they left foe Canada. Donald worked in Steel, John a dealer in cut stone in Woodstock, Ont. Canada. John meeting Marian and Alexander in Hamilton went with them to Brandford to work.
In 1858 Alexander was employed by a steel company to operate their hotel in Wayandote. Marian married James JUDGE and left for Indianapolis. Alex went then to Detroit, back to Woodstock to learn to cut stone and marry Jeanette JONHSTON,
