Looking for Robert A Matheson (Canada/MI)
I'm looking for my great-grandfather Robert A. Matheson (b. abt 1864). He was married to Mary Jane Monteith (b. abt 1865) when they were in their early 30s.
They both seem to have been born in Canada. Mary Jane's parents were both from Canada as was Robert's father; his mother was from Scotland.
Mary came from a large family (I think she was one of 12 or 13). I don't know anything about Robert's family except that he had a sister Jesse.
Mary immigrated to the US in 1876 and Robert in 1879. They both lived near Detroit, MI.
They had only two children: Viola (b. 1898) and Marguerite/Margaret (b. 1902). Viola and her daughter Shirley used to visit Robert's sister Jesse ("Aunt Jesse to Viola) in Canada. I believe that Jesse might have been well-to-do (maids and bell service).
Robert is reported to have worked as a tugboat or barge captain on the Great Lakes at one point in his life. I believe he was an inspector in the auto industry later on.
The only document I have been able to find that references their existence is the 1930 US census (they were in their 60s by then). Their daughter Viola is actually in the same census on the same page, as she and her husband (Norman Stanton) were living next door to them. Robert and Mary Jane were still alive in 1944 (the year of a living granddaughter's marriage).
Any help would be incredible!
P.S. I will post a similar message in the Monteith forum, looking for information on Mary Jane.
P.P.S. In case a curious relative comes across this post: I am from Viola's sister, Marguerite Gregg, nee Matheson. Marguerite is my paternal grandmother, but she died about 10 years before I was born.
