So, reading the will of John T doesn't actually clear up the last name of Francis M.So, where is the proof, I wonder?
The Bailey connection is curious. Our ancestor is William Couch b1790 SC, he marries Mary Harris b1790 SC in 1807 Spartanburg and separates from her before 1850.William is eventually traced from Spartanburg, SC to Jackson, Cherokee, Habersham and Murray, GA. In 1850 Cherokee, GA he is found in the home of Cheney Carver, a female b1804 sometimes NC and SC head of household. He's in the middle of the family and under him are two other people we know aren't Couch but not listed as Carver, so we've traced every person backwards and forwards until we finally figured out the connection. The two adult women in the household Cheny and Susannah appear to have married Carver men, perhaps William and Thomas out of Rabun, GA, one of these women is probably Susannah Bailey b1795, da of William Bailey decd, mentioned in the will of James Bailey d1826, Bk F, pg 51. James wills the heirs of his son, (Madison, Susannah, and James), William's portion. The other woman is Cheney Carver, who is found in the 1880 Pickens, GA home of John M. Bailey b around 1803 married to Sarah. This John M is in 1870 Pickens, GA and in 1860 Jackson, GA.I think this could be John 'Madison' Bailey, son of William mentioned in James Bailey's will and brother to Susannah Carver. After researching a bit further, I found that William Bailey's brother James was said to have married Elizabeth Harris Dec 23, 1805 Elbert, GA.This Elizabeth Harris is probably a sister of my Mary Harris Couch b1790, 1st wife of my William Couch b1790.
Our connections aren't clear as we know that William Couch was most likely a son of one of James Cheek's boys in the Laurens, Spartanburg SC area. The very distinctive dna quirk is an exact match to Richard Cheek b1690 (of Beaufort). That's why our research has to stretch so far and wide, so we can find the right parentage, both male and female that brought him into the Couch group 2.Every one of his Couch children match this one dna.
In 1870 census, John M Baily is found in Pickens, GA pg 71, nearby is neighbor Bluford Mauldin age 43. This has to be the lead to who John W Mauldin b1870 and how he ends up in the Bailey home.In 1830 John Bailey is in Jackson, GA, in 1840 he is in Gwinnett, Ga pg 23, 1850 John Bailey and Sarah are in Hall, GA pg 116 with Nancy Mauldin pg 117 and Coleman Mauldin pg 118, In 1860 he is John M Bailey in Jackson, GA pg 11, near Elrod family. Let me know if you need any more detailed connections.Hope this helps.Cynthia
