One of the Timms-Couch researcher posted a message regarding John W Mauldin born 1870 living with Bailey family in Pickens , GA , in 1880.Isn't he the John W that you believe to be a son of Matilda?Do you think Sarah Bailey could be a Mauldin?

Yes, John W. Mauldin, born 1870, was probably Matilda’s son.
Matilda is listed with Lemuel Homer’s father, FRANCIS MAULDIN 1789-1865, and Francis’ wife in the 1860 Pickens Co. GA. census – Matilda was about age 27, as I recall.Francis is listed in the 1850 Habersham Co. GA census with wife, one son (Bluford 1827-1912) and two daughters which were probably Matilda and Eliza.Only initials are shown for the 1850 census. Most of us cannot be 100 percent certain about anything, but I believe Matilda was one of Lemuel Homer’s sisters and one of Francis’ daughters.
In the 1870 Pickens Co. GA census, Matilda is listed as head-of-household with 4 minor children.I am going by memory, but I think Andrew was 9, Sarah was 7, Leroy was 5 and John W. Mauldin was age 2/12.I think his full name was John Wesley Mauldin.I don’t know if Matilda was the mother of these 4 children, but I am inclined to think she was their mother.
Bluford was living in Resaca GA in the 1860 census with his wife – ELIZA JANE BYNUM was her name, as I recall. Most every house was hit with gunfire during the battle of Resaca. In the 1870 Pickens Co. GA census, Bluford is living in Ludville in western Pickens Co. GA with his second wife, ELIZABETH J. BAILEY LUSK – a War Between the States widow. They also had a son named JOHN WESLEY MAULDIN, but he died at about age 7.You found headstones on find-a-grave for this family.I believe the E. J. MAULDIN headstone is Elizabeth J. not Eliza J.
Matilda died during 1872 and John W. Mauldin, age 10, is listed in Bluford’s father-in-law’s household (Bailey) in the 1880 Pickens Co. GA census - Leroy is listed with the Gladdis family in Gilmer Co. GA.Sarah married JOHN CALVIN JONES during 1878.In the 1880 census, Sarah says the birth location of her father is “unknown”.

Ok, so the Bailey family are parents of Elizabeth Bailey Mauldin & kinda sorta kin to John W.They would be his uncle's in-laws.Thanks for clarifying.

You’ve got it.
When Bluford and Elizabeth Bailey Lusk were married, Elizabeth had 2 children – Marion Lusk and I forget the daughter’s name.I swapped emails with one of the Lusk children’s descendants years ago, and he was telling me which battle the Lusk husband was killed – but as usually, I don’t recall off hand.
I don’t know what happened to Bluford’s first wife, Eliza Bynum. She could have been killed during the Battle of Resaca because gunfire most surely hit their house.Bluford was in Fort Valley , Georgia , as a Confederate Army blacksmith at the time.Bluford applied for a state pension about 1900 for being in the army.He wrote on his application that he moved to GA during 1850.He married Eliza Bynum in Habersham Co. GA during 1850.As I recall, he received $60.00/yearfor about 10 years then about $100.00 about 1911 because he was “...feeble, destitute and blind.”He had lost the use of his left eye in a 1890 photo. He died about 1912, as I recall. His headstone reads, “B. MAULDEN”.
